VENUE :  PAIRC AN PHIARSAIGH      DATE:  SATURDAY 26TH  SEPTEMBER 2009

PIARSAIGH NA DROMODA 0-14 KENMARE 2-05

Kerry’s Declan O’ Sullivan made a welcome return to his roots at Páirc an Phiarsaigh on Saturday evening and his presence alone was going to give the home-side a distinct advantage ever before the ball was thrown in. However, Kenmare’s trump card in the shape of Paul O’ Connor was to get the better start with two points in the early stages of the game. Kerry minor captain Niall O’ Shea was first to score for the Pearses, followed by two further points from frees. The game came alive with the first of the only two goals of the match from the visitor’s mid-fielder Seán Hussey who fisted the ball into the net. As the first half was drawing to a close Hussey managed to put way his second goal with relative ease. The half-time score was Piarsaigh na Dromoda 0.06 to Kenmare’s 2.03.

Ironically the game had a number of similarities to Kerry’s All-Ireland against Cork with Piarsaigh na Dromoda maintaining the greater share of ball possession, clawing back the opposition’s early lead and making timely substitutions in the second half. Aidan O’ Connor used his roaming role to full advantage and picked up a lot of loose ball. Aidan Shine O’ Sullivan put his stamp on the game at centre field breaking down the majority of ball for his half-forwards particularly in the last quarter of the game. Kenmare’s mid-fielders Seán O’ Sullivan and Seán Hussey did put the home-side to the test right throughout the second half, but unfortunately their side’s only two scores of the second half came from the boot of Seán O’ Leary. Colm O’ Connor was very solid in defence and kept Kenmare’s Paul O’ Connor scoreless in the second half despite the latter’s near goal miss. Meanwhile, Piarsaigh na Dromoda’s introduction of substitute Thomas Curran very early in the second half to the full-forward lineup allowed Declan O’ Sullivan take a pivotal role in the half forward line from where he orchestrated the constant attacks on the Kenmare defence.

Apart from a number of frees by Declan O’ Sullivan there were also a number of well taken points from play by younger brother Dominic as well as Niall O’ Shea and the powerful Denis ‘Shine’ O’ Sullivan. The Pearses could take heart in their performance on home turf against a strong physical Kenmare side and they will be hoping that this win will be enough to prevent their relegation in what has proved to be the most competitive of all divisions this year. The final score was Piarsiagh na Dromoda 0.14 to Waterville’s 2.05. The game was refereed by Valentia’s Tommy Gilligan

SRAITH AN CHONTAE ROINN 3 ROUND 8

VENUE :  PAIRC AN PHIARSAIGH      DATE:  SATURDAY 15TH AUGUST 2009

PIARSAIGH NA DROMODA 0-07 AN COIREAIN 2-06

The local healthy rivalry that exists between these two teams from the parish of Dromid is always guaranteed to draw a sizeable crowd. There were a number of notable absences from the Piarsiagh na Dromoda panel in the shape of intercounty players Declan O Sullivan and minor captain Niall Ó Sé but the well-estabished senior players together with some new young blood did gel for the most part and probably provided the better display of football on the night. However, Waterville’s opportunistic young Barry O’ Dwyer put the ball in the back of the net on two occasions (one in each half) and this was enough to keep the Pearses at bay.

Within two minutes Waterville’s mid-fielder Gearóid O Sullivan and their accurate free-taker Stephen O’ Dwyer had noched up a point each. The neighbour’s mid-fielder Gearóid and Séamus O’ Sullivan were in command but a solid Dromid defence led by Aidan and Denis (Shine) O’ Sullivan together with half forwards Dominic O’ Sullivan and Aidan O’ Connor were equally impressive for the hosts. Points secured from frees by Thomas Curran and Kevin O’ Sullivan kept the home side in touch but a short kick out by the Dromid goalie was punished by Barry O’ Dwyer’s clever interception who scored his first of the two goals of the match. However, the home-side kept its shape and clawed back the lead with points from play by Cian Hallissey and a lively Donal Ger O’ Sullivan. The half time score was 1.03 to 0.06.

There was everything to play for in the second half but despite all the possession the home side had they were unable to capitalise and Ciaran Dennehy’s save of the Tomas Curran’s penalty shot together with substitute Christopher Farley’s near miss at goal were signs that lady luck was not going to play a part for the home-side. On the other hand Fergal Cronin, Alan O’ Sé took their scores well followed by another from a free by Stephen O’ Dwyer. Finally, in the last quarter of the game Barry O’ Dwyer was again in the right place at the right time to put the ball in the net despite goalie Kieran Bank’s best efforts. The Pearses one and only score of the second half came in the dying minutes of the game from the boot of Colm O’ Connor which proved to be too little too late. The final score was Piarsiagh na Dromoda 0.07 to Waterville’s 2.06.

The game was refereed by Valentia’s Tommy Gilligan.

SRAITH AN CHONTAE ROINN 3 ROUND 5

VENUE :  PAIRC AN PHIARSAIGH      DATE:  SATURDAY 30TH MAY 2009

RESULT :  PIARSAIGH NA DROMODA 2.07  BEAUFORT  1.08

There were many wasted opportunities on both sides but at the end of the evening it was only a kick a ball that separated these two teams. Neither team performed to its best but nevertheless the punters were treated to a very tight and exciting game. Despite a below par performance by Na Piarsaigh, it was Thomas Curran who produce the goods when it counted and he snatched the one point lead from the visitors by scoring a goal in the dying minutes of the game. However, it was Beaufort who got down to business immediately and within the first minute the ball was moved quickly through the Dromid defence and into the hands of their free-taker Padraig O Sullivan who scored their first and only goal of the match. The visitor’s midfield combination of Damien Breen and Padraig Hallisey did make their presence felt throughout the game and fed some good ball to their forwards in the first half which resulted in a commanding lead of 1.06 to 0.03 in the 23rd minute of the game.

An opportunistic goal from the boot of Donal Ger O’Sullivan ensured the Pearses were not going to be intimidated by this stronger physical side and a point from Na Piarsaigh’s ever hard-working Dominic O’ Sullivan narrowed the gap at half time to a scoreline of 1.06 to 1.04 for Beaufort.

There were a number of notable ansentees from the Dromid panel, in the shape of intercounty players Declan O'Sullivan, Kerry Minor Captain Niall O'Se and the injured Aodhan Shine o'Suilleabhain. but the experienced players on duty together with some new young blood did gel for the most part and gradually pulled back the Beaufort lead, starting with a point from Caoimhin Jackie O'Suilleabhain and 2 points from free taker Tomas O'Currain.

Beaufort’s Padraig O’ Sullivan, Francis Courtney and Michael O’ Sullivan held a lot of possession but were not penetrating the Dromid defence with solid performances from Donal M. O’ Sullivan, Aidan O’ Connor and Colm O’ Connor. Beaufort’s goalie Mick Moriarty must have been bitterly disappointed to concede the last goal to Thomas Curran as otherwise he did well with good distribution throughout the game.  Therein ended the game giving a final score of Piarsaigh na Dromoda 2.07 to Beaufort 1.08. The game was refereed by Valentia’s Tommy Gilligan.

SRAITH AN CHONTAE ROINN 3 ROUND 3

VENUE :  PAIRC AN PHIARSAIGH      DATE:  SATURDAY 9TH MAY 2009

RESULT :  PIARSAIGH NA DROMODA 0.07  BALLYMAC 0-06

Piarsaigh na Dromoda gained another 2 points in this years Co League with a hard fought, 1 point victory on Saturday evening, where scores were very much kept to a minimum. Declan O'Suilleabhain lined out at midfield for the Pearses, but were missing Aidan Shine O'Suilleabhain, who has a hamstring injury, and Niall O'Se was unavailable due to the Kerry Minors playing on Wednesday evening next in the Munster MFC Semi V Clare. On the other hand, Ballymac were missing the Galvin twins, Philip and Matthew, who are also on the Kerry Minor team.

Ballymac were lively early on, with midfielders Gene O'Keeffe and Kevin O'Shea having a good battle with Pearses' Declan and Denis Shine O'Suilleabhain. However it was Caoimhin Jackie O'Suilleabhain who had the Pearses in front with a point. During the course of the 1st half, Declan O'Suilleabhain landed 3 frees. Ballymac replied had 3 points of their own in this also to leave the Pearses in front by the slenderist of margins, 0-04 to 0-03

Ballymac came out all guns blazing and reeled off three unanswered points to open up a 2-point lead, with their forward line causing plenty problems for the Dromid defence. That was to be their final scores of the game as the Pearses began to regroup and Declan O'Sullivan scored 2 more frees along with a point from play from corner forward Mike O'Conchubhair, to leave them a point to the good entering the final 10 minutes. The game was in the balance right until the end, with Ballymac throwing everything bar the kitchen sink at the home side, but the defence stood firm, with Kevin O'Leary, Colm O'Conchubhair and Aodhan O'Conchubhair particularly prominent.

There was still a late scare for the Pearses to contend with, but 'keeper Kieran O'Bruchain was alert to the situation to pull off a fantastic save. Soon after, ref Peter Lyons blew for full time and Piarsaigh na Dromoda held out to win by a point on the score Piarsaigh na Dromoda 0-07 Ballymac 0-06

SRAITH AN CHONTAE ROINN 3 ROUND 1

VENUE :  PAIRC AN PHIARSAIGH      DATE:  SUNDAY 5th APRIL 2009

RESULT :  PIARSAIGH NA DROMODA 0.11 ST. PAT’S BLENNERVILLE  1.11

Perfect conditions prevailed for what was to be a touch physical game at Pairc an Phiarsiagh last Sunday afternoon.  Within one minute of the game the Pearses midfielder Colm Ó Connor had pointed. However, St. Pat’s David O’ Callaghan was quick to put the first of many points on the scoreboard with one in the second minute.  Intercounty player Declan O Sullivan was soon to make his presence felt by adding two points in quick succession. However the only goal of the match came in the 18th minute from the boot of  Pat’s No. 13 Johnny Enright. However, O’ Sullivan and Kevin O’ Leary added a number of points leaving a half time score of 1.05 to 0.08.

It was all to play for in the second half but the visitors started with a number of points in quick succession beginning with one from play in the first minute from man of the match and top scorer David O Callaghan.  The Pearses kept the pressure on at all times but they were unable to feed enough ball into the dangerman Declan O’ Sullivan. Despite the positional changes made up front by the home team there was some excellent defending by Shane Brosnan and Seán Kelly who made a couple of runs passed midfield and into the paths of both David O Callaghan and captain Liam Poff who added to their tally with points from play. Joe Costello and Brendan Poff also did some hard grafting up front despite strong defending from Aidan Shine O Sullivan and Donal M. O Sullivan.

Blenverville had a six point lead three quarter way into the game before Dromid’s Micheál Sheehan put one over followed by points from Kevin Ó Leary and the hard-grafting Denis Shine Ó Sullivan. Unfortunately, it was too little too late and the stronger team held on to their lead despite a few chances of an equalising goal in the dying minutes of the game. The final score was Piarsaigh na Dromoda 0.11 to St Pat’s Blenerville 1.11.
